What is turbine housing?

The turbo housing is an important component in the architecture of a turbocharger, designed for complete control of engine exhaust gases. Among the main functions of this automotive part are the collection of exhaust gases and the adjustment of their direction towards the turbo wheel, resulting in its rotation. This process increases the pressure of the driving gases, optimizing the boost pressure.

Turbine housings are typically made of two materials:

steel;
cast iron.

The cast iron turbine housing and the steel variant are chosen for their ability to withstand high temperatures and corrosion resistance, allowing for a durable and reliable rear turbo housing. Damage or wear to this part can lead to improper operation of the turbocharging system, so it is necessary to ensure the integrity of this component, which affects overall performance.

How to determine the size of turbo housings?

The size and shape of the turbocharger turbine housing directly affect its efficiency, so manufacturers pay great attention to detailed design, which is unique for each car brand and model. The AR number can be used to understand the size of the part. A larger size of the hot turbine housing is designed to handle higher power by increasing the volume of exhaust gases needed to rotate the turbine wheel. At the same time, a smaller turbocharger housing has the advantage of faster rotation, although it generates additional resistance for the engine, limiting the flow of exhaust gases.

The bypass valve in the turbine housing has the option of regulating the flow of exhaust gases, preventing the turbine from exceeding its speed and reducing the risk of damage. As a result, such models gain additional features:

quick rotation with the flap closed;
minimization of resistance with the flap open.

However, there is a limitation on the maximum achievable boost due to the automatic opening of the bypass valve, preventing additional speed increase.

Conversely, a non-standard turbine housing without a bypass valve can provide higher peak boost readings due to optimal exhaust gas flow.

An important aspect in choosing the correct cast iron turbine housing is identification by the serial number of the turbocharger. In the Wiatreo online store, you can enter this number on the website using the search box and find the corresponding turbine housing, ensuring full compatibility with the exhaust part of the turbocharger and compliance with the customer's car brand.
