What is a washer under a screw?
Screw washers of a turbocharger are an essential mounting element that not only creates an additional surface contact but also prevents the screw from loosening during operation. They are a mandatory component of the turbine structure since turbochargers operate in an environment with significant temperature fluctuations (from -30 to +90°C) and are subject to constant vibrations. Screw washers resist oscillating movements and loosening of the connection due to strong vibrations in the entire system.
Materials with high strength and corrosion resistance, such as copper, steel, titanium, and brass, are used for the production of clamping plates. Considering the aggressive operating conditions, washers are often subjected to additional processing, including the application of zinc coating to enhance their corrosion resistance.
The size of the screw washer is determined according to the diameter of the fastening element with which it is used. This ensures a tight fit and proper transfer of the load from the screw to the attached turbine. GOST requirements allow for the presence of microscopic defects that do not affect the functionality and overall properties of the component.
How are screw washers used in connections?
A screw washer is used as a "spacer" between the screw and the mating surface, increasing the tightness of the connection. Different types of washers are used depending on the attachment location in the turbocharger. It can be either a locking or a spring washer, each with its unique properties:
Locking washer — this type is relevant for fastening connections prone to friction loss due to vibration or loosening.
Spring washer — used to provide axial load on the fastening, compensating for the effects of vibration or thermal expansion. A spring clamping plate has the property of "springing," allowing it to maintain constant pressure on the connection, even when exposed to various external influences.
